Abstract

The present research analyzed the impact of physical activity on work-related stress in professors and administrators at the University of La Guajira, aiming to provide empirical evidence that contributes to the promotion of well-being in academic contexts. A quantitative, correlational, and cross-sectional design was applied, using internationally validated instruments such as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF) to assess exercise habits and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to evaluate psychological tension. The findings revealed a strong and significant negative correlation (r = -0.98; p < .001), indicating that participants with higher engagement in physical activity reported lower levels of perceived stress. These results are consistent with international research that highlights the protective role of exercise on mental health and emphasize the importance of implementing institutional strategies that foster active lifestyles and self-care practices in higher education settings. Therefore, it is suggested to design physical activity programs tailored to the specific needs and schedules of faculty and administrative staff, prioritizing not only the intensity of exercise but also its accessibility, enjoyment, and sustainability over time, in order to strengthen resilience, reduce occupational stress, and contribute to the construction of healthier and more productive academic environments.
