CURRICULUM REDESIGN IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: A CHILD-CENTERED APPROACH TO DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING THROUGH REFLECTIVE PRACTICE

Abstract

This article derives from a research study focused on curriculum redesign in early childhood education from a development- and learning-centered perspective. The study emerged from the identification of gaps in the articulation between pedagogical purposes, child development characteristics, and classroom practices at Institución Educativa Distrital La Magdalena in Barranquilla, Colombia, which limit the creation of meaningful and contextually relevant experiences. Using a qualitative action research design, a participatory and critical-reflective process was implemented, involving teachers, administrators, and families through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, document analysis, and collaborative workshops. The interpretative analysis revealed tensions between pedagogical conceptions and contemporary frameworks of child development, as well as strengths and opportunities for curriculum improvement. The findings support a set of guidelines for a comprehensive, flexible, and contextualized curriculum aimed at strengthening the teacher’s mediating role and recognizing the child as an active subject of learning. The study concludes that curriculum redesign framed around development and learning constitutes a pathway to ensure quality, relevant, and coherent early childhood education aligned with current sociocultural challenges. It also contributes to teacher reflection and the continuous improvement of educational practices in early childhood.
