RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BODY MASS INDEX AND BODY COMPOSITION IN UNIVERSITY TAEKWONDO PLAYERS

Authors

Abstract

The present study examines the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and body composition, particularly the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), in university taekwondo athletes from the Corporación Universitaria de la Costa (CUC) and the Universidad Libre (CUL). The sample consisted of 40 taekwondo athletes, 20 men and 20 women, aged between 18 and 25 years.

Anthropometric measurements were used to calculate BMI and WHR, and the correlation between both indicators was analyzed. The results show a positive and significant correlation between BMI and WHR, suggesting that a higher BMI is associated with a higher risk of abdominal fat accumulation in this population. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring both BMI and WHR in athletes, as they can be key indicators of health and sports performance. The research suggests the need for interventions aimed at optimizing the body composition of taekwondo athletes to improve performance and prevent health risks.
