Analysis of toxic leadership toward healthcare workers at a hospital in the Atlántico department in 2023

Abstract

Objective: To analyze toxic leadership and its impact on healthcare workers at a hospital in the
Department of Atlántico during 2023, identifying its causes, manifestations, and effects on the
emotional and mental well-being and professional development of the staff. Methodology: The
research was conducted using a positivist quantitative approach, with a descriptive, crosssectional field design. The study population consisted of physicians and nurses in the hospital’s
clinical care area, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted via an
online questionnaire administered to a sample of 77 participants. Results and conclusions: The
results showed that toxic leadership is a reality in the hospital, with 92% of respondents
reporting toxic behaviors by their leaders, causing stress, anxiety, and obstacles to professional
development. It is concluded that there is an urgent need to implement policies that promote
healthy leadership, effective communication channels for reporting toxic behaviors, and
training programs in emotional intelligence and stress management for leaders.
